Draftt vs Milanote: which one for film and advertising work

Short answer: Milanote is a calm, mature board for organizing any creative project, with good mobile apps and a free plan you can live in. Draftt is a canvas made for film, advertising and music video work: it adds a catalog of credited frames from real commercials and videos, a library you search by color and by lookalike, presentations (decks) built in, and AI assistants that can build boards for you. If you mostly write and collect, Milanote is enough. If your boards end up as treatments and pitch decks, Draftt saves you the extra tools.

Pick Milanote if

  • You want a free plan to use for real: Milanote's free plan has no time limit and holds 100 notes, images or links.
  • You work from your phone or iPad a lot. Milanote has iPhone, iPad and Android apps, and a Mac app. Draftt is on the web only for now.
  • Your work is mostly writing: Milanote exports boards to Word and Markdown.
  • You are a team of several people and want one flat price instead of paying per seat.

Pick Draftt if

  • You look for references in commercials, music videos and films and want to know who made them. Draftt's Explore is a curated catalog of frames with credits: director, cinematographer, production company, agency.
  • You need to find an image again in a big library. Draftt indexes every image you save, so you can search by what is in it, by color, or for images that look like one you pick.
  • Your board becomes a presentation. Draftt has decks inside the same place: slides with your references, import from Canva, PDF export.
  • You work with Claude or ChatGPT. Draftt connects to them through MCP, so they can search your references and build boards and decks for you.
  • You put video on the board. Videos up to 100 MB play inline, and you can grab frames from them onto the board.

What Milanote does well

Milanote has been around for about ten years, and it shows. Its boards are pleasant, fast and easy to understand on the first day. Reviewers praise how it "just clicks with how creative people actually think", and even competitors call it one of the most pleasant tools for a mood board. It has 37 templates, including storyboards, shot lists and moodboards, a web clipper for every major browser, and apps on every device. If your team is not on the same tool yet and you want something nobody has to learn, Milanote is a safe choice.

The common complaints are the mobile apps (people describe them as companions to the desktop rather than a place to work), the small free plan if you collect many images, and the lack of offline mode.

Where Draftt is different

References with credits. In Milanote you bring every image yourself. Draftt also gives you Explore, a catalog of frames from published commercials, music videos and films, each with the people who made it. You can search it by text, by color or by similar images, open a work to see all its frames, and save a frame to your library or drop it onto a board. For a director preparing a treatment, knowing that a frame is from a specific cinematographer is often the point.

A library that finds things. Every image you save in Draftt, from the web clipper, an upload or a board, is described and indexed. You can type "neon street at night, rain", pick a color, or ask for images like one you already have.

The presentation is in the same place. A Milanote board can be exported as a PDF. In Draftt a deck is a real presentation with slides, made from the same references, that you present, share by link or download as PDF. If your treatment lives in Canva, you can import it as an editable deck.

AI that works on your boards. Draftt runs an MCP server, so assistants like Claude and ChatGPT can search your references and the catalog, and build boards and decks with you. Milanote has no AI features on its site today.

Where Draftt falls short

  • There is no open free plan right now. New accounts start with a 7 day free trial of Pro; people invited to someone's board or team use Draftt free.
  • No apps in the stores yet: Draftt is a web app.
  • The catalog is young. It is curated by hand and grows every week, but it is smaller than dedicated reference libraries.
  • Milanote exports to Word and Markdown; Draftt exports decks to PDF.
  • For a team of four or more, Milanote's flat team price is cheaper than Draftt's per seat price.

Can I use both?

Yes. Many people keep their writing in one tool and their references in another. Draftt's web clipper works on any site, and you can paste images and links into a board, so moving a board over is a matter of copying its images.

FAQ

Is Draftt a Milanote alternative?

Yes, for visual work. Both are boards where you collect images, notes, links and files and share them with others. Draftt adds a catalog of credited references, presentations and AI assistants, and is focused on film and advertising.

Is Draftt cheaper than Milanote?

For one person, about the same per month (US$12 against US$12.50) and a bit cheaper per year (US$96 against US$119.88). For larger teams Milanote's flat team plan costs less.

Does Draftt have a free plan like Milanote?

Not open to everyone yet. You can try Pro free for 7 days, and anyone invited to a board or a team uses Draftt free.

Does Milanote have AI?

Its website does not offer AI features today. Draftt connects to Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants through MCP.

Can I make a treatment or pitch deck in Milanote?

You can lay one out on a board and export it as PDF. Draftt has decks for that, with slides, Canva import and PDF export, plus treatment templates.
